KIA ORA KOUTOU KATOA WELCOME TO YOU ALL

My name is Hayden. I’m a registered psychotherapist (PBANZ). I am ACC registered. I specialise in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. And, I welcome all those who are struggling with mental health difficulties and/or those who want to have a greater understanding of who they are.

My Approach

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a process and insight-oriented talk therapy that aids self-discovery and the working through of underlying causes of psychological suffering and relationship difficulties.

I offer a warm, open, containing psychotherapeutic engagement where I will closely observe and listen to what you bring and how you bring it. In turn, we will consider and reflect on how your life experiences and internal dynamics inform who you are, while supporting you in discovering new ways to manage life stresses and relationships with others.

This process is often deeply emotional, integrating aspects of you that have been pushed to the periphery and allowing something new to emerge.

This process has helped many to:

  • enrich self-understanding

  • work through psychological difficulties, conflicts, dilemmas, and resistances

  • learn from experience

  • discover new ways to manage/process everyday stresses

  • navigate relationships and social interactions

  • nourish their capacity to grieve, let go, and change

  • deepen their ability to connect with and disconnect from others

  • work through attachment difficulties

  • live more congruently/fully

To do this, I draw from several psychodynamic and psychoanalytic understandings of human psychology, development, and technique, such as:

  • Object Relations Theory

  • Attachment Theory

  • Neuropsychotherapy / Neuropsychoanalysis

  • Trauma Theory

My Experience

I have been practising psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy since 2017. I have provided individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy and clinical supervision. I have had the pleasure of being the therapeutic lead for a 6-week, group-focused, psychodynamic day programme based on Te Whare Tapa Wha. I have also had the privilege of practising psychotherapy in private practice and at several organisations, including Dove Hospice and the Ashburn Clinic. In doing so, I have worked and had success with a diverse range of people struggling with an assortment of mental health difficulties and life struggles.

I have had training for most presentations. I have a particular interest in people struggling with the wake of traumatic experiences, neglect, and abuse; relationship difficulties; mood and anxiety difficulties; sense of home and belonging; grief and loss; perception and thought processes; and people who want to have a better understanding of themselves and want a more fulfilling life.

Outside of psychotherapy, I have a background in the performing arts, horticulture, hospitality, ESOL teaching, and early childhood education, and have lived abroad in South Korea and in Canada.
